trendy \'tren-dē\, adjective: marked by ephemeral, superficial, or faddish appeal or taste
CONFESSION: I have an aversion to things that are trendy.
I do. If I think something is cool before it becomes trendy, fine. I just don't get giddy school-girl excited. (High pitched screaming really annoys.) But if I haven't discovered it before it hits the trendy point, I veer far, far away.
For example, Harry Potter. I refused to read it for about five years. Everyone was so ridiculously excited that I was completely repulsed. I only ever read them because my little brother Liam gave me his copy of the first book and told me I could borrow it. He was 9. I was a sucker. And I admit, I loved it. Within four months I was caught up on the series. My grades suffered that semester.
This aversion to the trendy would also explain why I utterly refuse to read the Twilight Series or get a Facebook account. Sorry guys, you love them so much I'm revolted. I'm dumb like that. (And in case you are worried, I don't think less of you for liking them. I also hate bananas, but I don't think less of you if you eat them. Plus, I was proven wrong with the whole Harry Potter thing. I know better than to pooh-pooh on people for liking things I don't.)
my parent's house

Anyway, all this is to say that I recently discovered that I am trendy. See, apparently living at your parents is the cool thing to do right now. Who knew? And yes, I finally bit the bullet and admitted to myself that we LIVE here. I've called this an 'extended vacation' long enough. It has been three months. We live here, dash it all.
So now I'm trendy. This is repulsive on so many levels. ;)

I sooooo totally knew that about you and trendiness. But it wasn't until I read your post that I realized, "holy smokes! I'm the exact same way!"
When I chopped my hair to sell it, it ended up inadvertently being an a-line cut, which, by the way wasn't "in" at the time. I loved it. Jason loved it. I grew it out eventually because the cost to maintain a short cut was starting to add up. I want to cut my hair that short again, but the a-line style has become the thing to do...at least in my neck of the woods. Conclusion: I won't get my hair cut in that style until the whole fad thing dies out again. Really weird, I know. But at least I know someone who understands me. :)
You are so funny. I did the same thing with the Harry Potter books. I was so annoyed that I was wrong. But, I got in on the Twilight thing before it was a big hit. I'll have to admit I enjoyed them, but they aren't as amazing as the hype suggests.
I'm the same way to some extent. If I like something, I'll get it whether its trendy or not. If I don't like something, I won't buy into it even if its supposedly the coolest thing since sliced bread. Like I refuse to ever buy Crocs no matter how comfortable people tell me they are or how cool they are because I think they are UGLY. As for Twilight, WAY over-hyped. Harry Potter is better
You know those big metal stars everyone has on their houses? I loved those before they were popular. But by the time I had a house and enough money to purchase said star, everyone had one. And I just couldn't do it.
PS Don't bother with Twilight. It's not worth your time.
Funny. I do this same thing. I wonder why we do it??
To be independent & prove our own style, I suppose!
I still haven't read a single Harry Potter or Twilight...
Rachel - Oh yeah! Those metal stars are a PERFECT example! They're cute, sure. But EVERYONE has them. Ew. Such a turn off.
I too resisted Harry Potter...for about 7 years. Then Bart started reading them, and in the middle of book...3 I think it was...I told him to just start reading outloud, and I have been hooked ever since. Now one of my lifelong dreams is to throw a Harry Potter Party at Halloween. What a turn around.
I was a bit concerned about your Harry Potter comments as I started to read. I was thinking perhaps that the Janae I knew and loved, the one that I would invite to all my parties (if she ever moved to California) was going to have to be permanently banned from our guest list. Good thing you left the dark side and joined the HP madness - I would have had to hate you. I wouldn't have liked doing it but I gotta stay true to my homeboy wizard.
Trendy is good sometimes-Like Facebook. However tattoos are trendy now and I think they are terrible!! You have to walk through the mine-field of trends and decide which suits you.
If you ever DO join facebook, you might just wish you had earlier. (that's what happened to me...and I was the same way with HP. Now I'm a crazy fan. But I still refuse to read twilight. like FOREVER refuse.)
You crack me up. Join Facebook!
Whoa! You've got a lot of comments on this one already. You've obviously struck a chord.
Things that are trendy and cool:
1. Apple products
2. Pixar movies
3. The Prius
Things that don't stand up to the hype:
1. All Star Wars prequels
2. All non-glaze Krispy Kreme varieties
3. skinny jeans
Twitter would be on one of the lists if I could figure it out.
HAHA! I had no idea we shared this trait in common, but now that I think about it, I can totally see you as that type of person. I remember distinctly desperately wanting a pair of overalls as a teenager - because I was weird and like things like that. Anyway, as SOON as they became popular and I could actually easily find a pair of overalls, my desire died! Trendy is soooo not cool. Unique and weird totally is. But what happens when unique and weird are trendy?? AAaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh!!!!
You've made untrendy, trendy...now what's everyone going to do. My head is spinning. :)
I too resisted the Twilight books because of all the hype, but when my 14 year old niece was reading them I had to see if they were age appropriate. So I read them. I did enjoy them, but not to the extent of all the hype.
About Twilight - stay away. Just...stay away. Your brain will thank you for it.
Seriously- no to twilight, yes to facebook, because it's "trendy"...you can find practically anyone on there. Even my mother.
I think there is a difference between everyone doing something because it's worthwhile and everyone doing something because it's hip. Living at parents = not hip, but worthwhile. Skinny jeans = hip, but yuck.
oooh, Heidi - we're definitely agreed on skinny jeans! And boyfriend jeans, too. So gross!
You aren't allowed to take over Trendy Tuesdays, those are the best. My boys are tommy hilfilgeramdigered out on Tuesdays. j/k like we'd ever spend the money. Have you noticed the trend toward wearing bikinis within our church going, young moms circle? It is so in Janae. We are so not hip!
Ruth - you so make me laugh! I didn't notice the bikini trend, but ew. How many young moms have show-off-able tummies, anyway?! And yeah, I don't think you and I would ever be hip in that circle. ;)
I would like to say I love Twilight and think it is worth reading:) And I was WAY a head of that trend.
Not that you need one more comment.
I too dislike trendy things (does this make it a trend now). I hate when I like something and then it gets trendy. I liked HP way before the movies and everyone else liked it but I couldn't stop once everyone else liked it now could I? I read Twilight because I know the author and was given signed copies but it's not worth the hype. Seriously you can read it but it's not HP by any means. It's like a marshmallow, good while it last but no substance and you really aren't sure why you ate it (read it) later. I too don't have a facebook account. I spend too much time on the computer as it is. I'm going to hold out for as long as possible.
-I hope you and Sam are taking advantage of the in-house babysitting to go on lots of dates! Especially after having such a hard time getting a babysitter in Maryland.
Oh, so THAT's why Janae Ricks hasn't accepted my friend request on facebook =}
