Must Do Utah: Canyonlands & Arches

Please tell me you have been to Arches National Park before. I mean, how can you be from Utah and NOT have gone to Arches?! It's on the license plate, for heaven's sake! Go. You won't regret it. My favorite part is actually just driving in - the cliffs are gigantically high and absolutely amazing. And they have some great kid friendly hikes.

Getting this family picture was quite the adventure. Random Photographer #1 hopped all over, taking half a dozen pictures at all different angles, acting as if we were on the red carpet. None of the pictures were in focus. Random Photographer (RP) #2 took a fine picture of Sam and I ... but cut off all three kids' heads. We really need a photographer to follow us everywhere we go. Except not the annoying paparazzi kind. I got enough of that with RP #1.

See Delicate Arch in the background?

Just 30-45 minutes from Arches is Canyonlands National Park. I'd actually never been there before. (Don't worry, I already repented.) It's a new favorite. Not only was it 30 degrees cooler than Arches (phew), but it was also waaaaaay less crowded. Contrary to the pictures of the canyons, it is actually really green. And so beautiful. In fact, we're moving here next week.

Every time I see the picture below I think, "I want three!" because it looks like three fingers.
WHEN (not if) we go again, here's what we'll do:

Day 1: drive to Canyonlands National Park (4 hours from SLC). See the sites. Pick a camping spot, and spend the night.
Day 2: drive to Arches National Park (45 min). See the sites. Drive home (4 hours).

Oh, and you know how dogs mark their territory? Apparently both Sease & Lije have been taking notes. And both marked Canyonlands as their territory. Need I say more?

Oh, now I'm sad that we didn't stop on our way from Provo to Albuquerque (which is another place you should visit).

So cool. Have I been there before? I don't remember doing it. Lame-o. It's okay. I have a sister who travels and I live through her. :)

Cara - we went to Arches after the Ward Youth Conference when we rafted the Colorado River. Were you there? I thought I was 14 or 15, which would mean you should have been there. But I could be wrong.

Oh, Lindsey - I'm definitely up for Albuquerque. It's only four hours from Sam's home town. Any suggestions of things we could do there?

You and your adventures amaze me!

Your children often remind me of dogs, too. They lick, drool, pee, and howl.

And they're cute.

I loved both of these parks.

And the finger-looking canyon is really cool.

You forgot to mention the red dirt that the kids got all over themselves on the hike. It looked like makeup or something. Excellent.

And I never had to repent. Because I'm not from Utah. Although I should repent for never having hiked The Grand Canyon, being from AZ and all.

Sam - You should DEFINITELY repent for that one! You guys are only two hours from the Grand Canyon. How can you never have hiked it?!

Nope, I've never been to either of those places. Erik always waxes poetical about them and yet he hasn't taken me. Maybe, just maybe we'll make it down there before we'll move. We'll see. And Erik loves that panoramic picture with the rain. He said, "Just look at the view we're leaving behind." to which I replied "Like I've ever seen it." HINT!!! Come on, man! HINT!!!! ;-)

Isn't it just a fun moment when you get to teach your little girl how to pee in nature? Kate was pretty wigged out by it, but the need to pee overpowered her need for a toilet seat. :)

Did you know that I biked the Canyonlands on a 100 mile, 4 day trip? It was awesome! I went with Joe...isn't he just one of the best things that has ever happened to me?

Krishele - No, I didn't know that! Seriously, girl, you are cut from a different cloth. Jason is so lucky to have someone as athletic as you are. Poor Sam. ;)

ps. Sease went for the same reason! She wanted a toilet badly, but she couldn't hold it in any longer!
