BETHESDA
Sam tells me that he's still recovering from our New York trip, so this week we just took a leisurely drive to Bethesda. It is a tiny, normal-looking place about the size of Provo. It is also super expensive to live in and has a reputation for housing only the rich. "Wait!" you say, "How can it be normal-looking but expensive at the same time?" The secret, dear friends, lies in the three rules of real estate: location, location, location. The closer you are to the ocean and to big cities, the more expensive the houses are. Thus our home in Spanish Fork would probably be four or five times as expensive if you transplanted it in Maryland. Our apartment here has 1000 less square feet and yet we pay $500 a month more for rent than we did for our mortgage. OUCH.Okay, so the reason we actually went to Bethesda was because back in our Wyview days we used to talk about how so many movies take place there. Unfortunately, now we can't think of any other than the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. So, if you think of any off the top of your head, please let me know! This is driving me crazy and all my google searches are yielding nada.
The one real site we stopped at on our trip was Uncle Tom's Cabin. Let me explain. Once upon a time there was a man named Josiah Henson. He was born on a slave plantation in 1789 and worked his entire adult life on a plantation in Bethesda. In 1830 he escaped with his family and wrote a book about his experiences as a slave. A woman named Harriet Beecher Stowe read his book and wrote a novel inspired by his life: Uncle Tom's Cabin. This little cabin is the original home that Josiah Henson, or "Uncle Tom", lived in as a slave. Pretty amazing that it is still standing, huh?! I must confess that I have never read Uncle Tom's Cabin, but I'm pretty inspired to do it now!

Roberta - First, in answer to your question about where the January movie is...um...well, I'm late and I haven't actually made it yet. Oops. Second, I wouldn't mind AT ALL if you copied! You wouldn't be the first. Plus, I was actually inspired by someone else who did a movie Christmas card a couple years ago. I just extended it to monthly. So I'm a copy cat too! :)

I cried while I was reading Uncle Tom's Cabin. I really liked it. Though, at the time it was written, it made alot of the people in the South mad. Oh, and my aunt lives in Bethesda. I should say great-aunt.
I have only read excerpts from it, but I couldn't take it. It was horribly sad. Babies being taken from there mamas. Need I say more?
Hey, Uncle Tom's Cabin has been on my to-read list for a wile. And since I read Gone With The Wind (which is basically written from the opposite point of view with respect to the slavery issue)it's moved up on the priority list. This post may make it the next book I read.
Do you pronounce the town Beth-es-duh? I think I've heard of it but I don't know of any movies there. I have 2 exposures to Uncle Tom's Cabin./
1. The movie The King and I where they do a terrible play of it
2. my AP US History book that credited that book as one of the major forces in Northern support for ending slavery and starting the Civil War
Pretty powerful book I'd say. Shame I haven't read it either. Many books that are that famous are distrubing on some level... like The Jungle by Uptain (?) Sinclair revolutionized the food/meat packing industry. I almost went vegetarian and I LOVE meat. The pen is mightier... Sorry my fingers got away from me again.
I know what you mean, there are tons of movies that take place in Bethesda! But right now, I can't think of any! Now that's gonna bug me too! I'll get back to you on this.

Erin - oh, I completely forgot about The King and I. That part was really funny to me! And I am really tempted to read The Jungle, but I LOVE steak. I mean LOOOOOOOOVE steak. And I'm scared it will convince me vegetarian. Like you said, the pen is mightier than the sword!
Oh, and Erin - yeah, you pronounce it like that. Except the 'es' part is more like 'ez'.
Isn't that amazing how real estate works? And you don't even have to go as far as New York...just the price difference of houses in Idaho vs. Utah is insane. One more reason I like it up here. :)
This was the most relaxing trip we've had yet. Hurray!!!
My only exposure to Uncle Tom's Cabin also comes from The King and I. Pretty interesting that the actual cabin is still standing though.
