Three Blurbs on Valentines

My Special Someone

Growing up I always looked forward to the day I would have a special someone for Valentines. But when I finally got old enough, it always seemed to elude me ...

1999 - I broke up with Spencer in December.
2000 - I broke up with JD in January.
2001 - Scott broke up with me in January.
2002 - Matt tried to break up with me in early February, but I figured it out and preemptively broke up with him even though I liked him a ton. Gotta save face, you know?
2003 - MISSION! Phew.
2004 - Ryan broke up with me the night before. Then showed up at my apartment at 6 am. Valentines morning to make up. Then broke up with me again that night. Then made up with me again the next night. Three days later I broke it off for good.
2005 - I FINALLY HAVE MY SOMEONE!!!

Then & Now

We always celebrate Valentines by going to the temple and having a nice dinner. (Although often they happen different nights because we have a nursing baby.) I recently found this picture of Valentines from a few years ago and I couldn't help but laugh at how much has changed. Three years, but oh the difference!

2006

Number of kids: 1
Temple Visited: Salt Lake City, Utah
Time spent beautifying: 2 hours
Where we ate: The Melting Pot
How much we paid: $200
(Sam wants me to say that we did have a $50 gift card ... as if spending only $150 makes us so much more frugal!)

2009
Number of kids: 3
Temple Visited: Washington, DC
Time spent beautifying: 8 minutes
Where we ate: Hard Rock Cafe
How much we paid: $45

SuperMom Valentines

This is my first Valentines as SuperMom, so for the days leading up to Valentines we ...

made Valentines cupcakes,
made heart shaped jigglers, and made Valentines cards for each other.

Look at how good you are! I wanted to make Valentines extra fun for the kids but I had to work most of the week. :o( But love the stories! Isn't married life TONS better! No more lame boyfriends to deal with. Just one amazing husband.

I sure feel ya on the never having a boyfriend to spend the day with until I got married! But now we don't bother celebrating it because we just had my birthday and it just doesn't seem to happen. :(

You know, I haven't kept track of all of my Valentine's excursions, but of all of the stuff that I have done on Valentine's, this years has been by far the best...and funny enough, the least expensive.

So Jason let me sleep in and got the kids watching cartoons and went out and got us McGriddles for breakfast. I was thrilled! I love those things! He got me some flowers and a card that was...very typical male...you'll have to ask me about it outside of public blogging space. Then we went snowboarding with his brothers that night. We got some free passes from my neighbor who does ski patrol there, so the only cost of the night was a babysitter (which wasn't cheap, but it was a whole lot better than paying a babysitter and paying for lift passes). I think the whole day was like $50. And it was the best! I guess that goes to show that money isn't everything.

And, yes, you are a super mom.

What a great blog post, Janae! Man, we stink at Valentine's Day. Going to the temple and eating out is such a good idea! I tell myself it's because we're still in school and yesterday I was cursing the stupid holiday mumbling about how it was really only a disgusting pagan ritual (that you really don't want to know about.) But, Erik and I did go out to Jazz Night at the Sky Club on campus (awesome big band jazz and DANCING)- dressed in jeans and everyone was totally black tie and formals! DOH! (We had to go for Erik's class, but still!) Totally lame, and you've inspired me to do better next year. :-)

Fun, fun, fun! And you know, I think you are skinnier this year. How is that possible after three kids? I really want to know!

Way funny about Ryan, I remember the days...

Rachel - I probably am skinnier, and I'll tell you how that is possible. At the time of the first picture I had exercised maybe five times my entire marriage. And I had a six month old, and was struggling to lose the baby weight (I was my fattest with my first. You'll find out why in a second). When I got pregnant with Lija I had a bunch of health problems and was told that I'd pretty much have to start exercising or I could count that as my last child. So I got super in shape for a pretty long time. I quit with Enoch, but I think I'm still living on fumes. And, by the way, thanks to your $500 post I have now gone running seven times. You totally motivated me. Thank you very much! :)

Good job, supermom! My kids didn't even realize it was Valentine's until the morning was half over. I'll have to do better next year. I didn't realize your lack of success with valentine's. Glad you've solved that now. :)

I remember the days when spending a lot of money for a special day seemed like a good idea. Now I think spending no money on a special day makes me feel cooler. Though I did really enjoy that fancy hotel in Park city that we stayed in for our 1st anniversary...

ummm......i'm pretty sure you spent more than 2 hours getting your hair curled that way - it was pretty much the whole day; i remember watching and being amazed that you had that much patience!!

great job with the valentine activities. your kids must have so much fun!

You look way prettier now (at least that's my opinion)! Sam looks the same. You are such a GRET mom, I didn't do anything with Emma for valentine's. STOP making the rest of us look bad! :) j/k Call me when you can. Amo-te menina

That's pretty funny to see the long journey it took to find the right one. I didn't realize that Ryan broke up with you so many times! He must have had a hard time finally just letting go of such a great girl. Glad you were able to preempt that one too and save face.

Love it.
(and am very jealous of your $45-DC Temple-8-minute-preptime date! I had sick kids and no sleep. I almost started crying when I saw the neighbor girl get picked up to go babysit. I wanted to open the door and yell, "YOU BELONG TO US and DON'T FORGET IT!!!!"

next year. next year.)

Where did you pick up such cute kids. I need to go shopping there...:)

Way to go mommy! I am so glad you have a nice tradition for Valentines. Holidays make life a little more exciting, right!

I've been meaning to comment on this post. I love your comparison posts. I really liked them when you were pregnant too. Maybe it's the anaylitical side of me but I love thinking about things that way. Matt and I almost went to the Melting Pot one time... then we looked at the menu online and decided maybe one year for an anniversary but sheesh that's an expensive place!

I think my New Years experiences were worse than my Valentines
up until 2003 no boyfriends to kiss on New Years
2004 Matt and I broke up on Dec 31st, yep it stunk
2005 a girl Matt had dated ended up at the same New Year's party and he was too embarrassed to introduce me as his girlfriend or kiss me at midnight (we almost broke up over this one)
2006 We're married so you'd better believe I got a kiss!

There's just so much pressure for holiday's like New Years and Valentines. I think couples break up often around these holidays because we've been dreaming about what it will finally be like to have that someone and when it isn't like we thought the relationship doesn't last!

Sidenote: I was intimidated by you before you became super-mom now I'm really scared to see how awesome you're going to be!
