10 things I wish I had known ...

before marriage
5 things I wish I had known before I got married ....
  1. Wrapping chopped onions in aluminum foil keeps the entire fridge from smelling like onions.
  2. You can buy garlic pre-minced in a jar.
  3. When covering pie crusts, folding a square of aluminum foil in fourths and then tearing off the inside corner (similar to how you do a paper snowflake) is much easier that trying to keep small strips of foil on the pie tin.
  4. Onion powder is a quick and easy substitute for chopped onions when you're in a hurry (1 small onion = 1/3 cup chopped onions = 1 tablespoon dried onion flakes = 1 teaspoon onion powder).
  5. Chocolate and blood come out with cold water, koolaid and berries (including cranberry juice and grape juice) come out with hot water.

after marriage, but before children

5 things I wish I had known before I had kids ....

  1. Morning sickness has nothing to do with mornings. (Although I really hate when I mention that I had pretty awful morning sickness, only to have women respond to me, "Well, I had all-day sickness!" Oooh, guess what. So does everyone else. Sorry, but 'morning sickness' is the universally accepted term for illness in the first trimester, whether or not it happens in the morning.)
  2. Labor is easier if you exercise periodically before you get pregnant. It is significantly easier if you still exercise while you are pregnant.
  3. Nursing a baby is nearly as miserable and painful as labor for the first few weeks (despite all the insistence that it's not supposed to hurt) but it is easy-peasy afterward.
  4. HOT water quickly and easily removes newborn mustard-colored poop stains.
  5. Rinsing rags thoroughly in cold water after wiping up milk or milk-based spills keeps the rags from reeking.

I am now coming to such realizations ;-)

If it weren't for this blog, I never would have known those things. Well, except the painful breastfeeding thing. That is by far worse than the actual labor...

So that second picture looks like EVERYBODY was photoshopped in. (Random, but that's just what came to mind.)

I'm totally with you on the morning sickness thing...and why is it that nobody REALLY warns you about the breastfeeding thing? And that sometimes despite your best efforts, it doesn't make you a horrible, worthless mommy if you end up being unable to do it at all? Sheesh!

I didn't know about the Koolaid and berries thing...thanks.

And that just reminded me that I need to purchase some onion powder...all I've got is onion salt...those two are not interchangeable!

Krishele - I learned the Koolaid thing when Seara poured an entire pitcher of cherry Koolaid all over my beige carpet. I almost sold her. Now that you mention the photoshop thing, I can definitely see it! The lighting is just kinda odd. :)

I was expecting some juicy details... but I guess I'll take the cleaning tips. I'm proud that most of them I've figured out by now (I'm a bit of a cleaner and I hate when my laundry gets stained).
-Nursing IS way harder than people make it seem- someone really needs to tell you that it does get easier after the first miserable weeks. I'd take labor over engorgement and blisters almost any day. Of course my labor wasn't exactly typical...
-Your hair looks really cute in the second picture- all flippy out
-I might have to steal this post idea... I like lists too!

Is that when you also stained the carpet with catsup to get it back to its normal color (the koolaid episode)? I can't remember, but it was genius.

Caroline - YUP. It was. The good old catsup re-stain. I only wish I had taken pictures!!

So...number 3 on the first list...that's ingenious!!! Never thought of that!

that's a great tip for the tinfoil on the pie crust! And I LOVE making pies!
My nurses insisted that nursing should be easy and that it would feel good. I basically just got toughened to it--but it took about THREE MONTHS. And three months later, Ender decided he didn't care about nursing much. And three more months later, he wouldn't let me. *sigh* I try to look at the bright side, that it was "freeing" or something. :)
Maybe I'll make a list like this...

I can't believe I never knew that chocolate needed to be washed in cold water! I never paid attention to that. I also love the pie crust tip! Thanks (not that I'll be using it anytime soon... I never make pie but I would love to learn to make them like you someday!)

Exercise DURING pregnancy. No way! It is much too hard, and growing a baby is so much work, we must be exempt from it--right! :)
