Ugh. It happened again. I so, so, so, SOOOOOO hoped it wouldn't. But it did. Yup, that's right. I can't have any dairy products while nursing Enoch. I hoped Seara was a fluke. I REALLY hoped Elijah was a break-the-statistical-trend repeat. But no. It looks like this is just going to be my life if I choose to nurse. Which I do.
Apparently when my kids are born their stomachs are incapable of breaking down the protein in cows milk. It actually isn't a problem for the first month - we don't know why - but it starts right around week 5 and can last up until their first birthday. By then their stomachs have finished forming the enzymes they need to break the proteins down. With Seara it lasted until she was 6 months. With Elijah it was 4 months. Maybe with Enoch it will be 2? Ha, ha. I won't get my hopes up.
I don't think you fully appreciate the gravity of this situation. Some kids just have this mildly. Not mine. I can't eat anything that has even trace amounts of milk proteins. That means milk, cream, sour cream, cheese, cottage cheese, ice cream, sherbet, ranch dressing (actually most salad dressings), butter, margarine, chocolate, etc. The list goes on and on! I can't have a lot of breads - I usually stick to making my own. Cookies? You might want to grab a barf bag. Here goes - I make them with butter flavored Crisco. Yes, CRISCO. I might as well slather the cookie dough on my hips, because that is right where it's going anyway.
Alright - here is my plea: if you have any really great meal suggestions or recipes that use NO dairy, please, PLEASE, PLEASE share!! Just leave 'em in the comments.
{You are wondering what happens if I eat dairy? Well, imagine the most agonizing, painful, high-pitched, squealing plea for help. Now imagine that lasting all day. Every day. For weeks. It is colic to the worst degree. (The doc actually thought Sease was colicky.) Now imagine projectile vomit. No, not spit up. No, not just a tablespoon. We're talking 4-6 oz that literally SHOOT out. When Seara was over my shoulder she wouldn't get wet. Neither would I. Neither would the floor. But the wall three feet away? Covered. Seriously, she could have won an Olympic medal. (The doc thought Seara had reflux, too.) Miracle of all miracles - I prayed about Seara's problems, randomly found an article about the milk protein, cut milk out of my diet, and suddenly she was an angel baby again! Luckily Elijah and Enoch didn't have to go through what she did because I already knew what was going on. So cutting out dairy is worth it. But dang, it is hard!}

Dude, I can't believe you spelled "medal" wrong. I'm shaking my head at you right now.
... and no more happiness! :-( What an amazing mom you are to keep up nursing. Here's one meal with no dairy:

It (optionally) goes well with cottage cheese if your kids or husband want some.
I blame the spelling on Sam, who was supposed to edit my post. It's all his fault! :) I fixed it now.
so sad for you. that is a severe change in diet. hopefully it won't last long. it must be a "hancock" thing because my lovlies are all allergic to milk after i stop breastfeeding. i get to buy expensive soy milk instead. so fun. i never even thought of it while i was nursing, hmmm i'll have to pay more attention. good luck, and i'll look for some recipies.
That stinks! I don't know if I could go without dairy! I'll look for some recipes!
Janae,
I'm so sorry that happened again. I practically live off of sugar and milk (I eat a lot of cereal these days) that is so tricky to not eat any dairy. Maybe you will have to eat rice and chicken every day. Maybe spice it up with some flavored rice :) Potatoes are probably out, except maybe if you put chili over it without any of the good toppings, pasta with a red sauce instead of a cream sauce? Hopefully it really only lasts a month or two!
That would be my worst nightmare, as I am addicted (literally) to milk. Good luck!
Wow, I don't think I would do it! I would go straight to formula! ;) I have a friend who is allergic to all milk products, so I will hit her up for some recipes. Good luck!! How much milk does the rest of your family get while you are nursing?
Hey Janae- It is Stephanie from the old ward in SF, (I was one of the people who came to the gospel doctrine class.)So fun to see you blog also!
Soo sorry to hear you have the challenge of a casein free diet! My kids and hubby have a hard time with milk products,
You can look up "raw recipes"," "casein free", etc in google you get some really weird ones but some really good ones too. Also "Autism diet" many times eliminates casein(milk protein) as well as gluten(wheat protein).
Hope it helps, and even more I hope this is a short lived trial like with the other 2!!!! My thoughts will definatly be with you!
I haven't really thought about what my diet would be like without milk. I don't think that much about it. I am so sad that you have this kind of stress to add to 3 kids. You are amazing to keep nursing.
I'm still off milk as well, but I'm not being very strict. Sometimes I eat some bread that has whey. But I haven't had milk, ice cream, cheese, yogurt, for 6 weeks.
I have eaten soy cheese, soy ice cream, and drunk soy milk. Charlie's symptoms are more mild. We're considering when to wean him. But soy formula is expensive, and we're still trying to verify that his body likes the soy.
I feel for you! Truly I do. I LOVE anything made from milk. Only a mother who's determined to nurse her baby would be willing to obey a diet like that for the sake of her baby...and her sanity, I guess! I suppose if I knew that the alternative was having an unhappy, uncomfortable, crying baby, I'd muster up the discipline to do it too.
We are also BIG Bryan Regan fans here! He is stinkin' hilarious!! We got to see a live show of his last year and was honestly the funniest thing I'd ever heard. I love his bit about the laying off dairy. All the dairy eaters with their party hats on...
Well, Janae, I tip my party hat off to you for laying off dairy for your baby!! ;-)
p.s.
I don't have any tried-and-true recipes to suggest, so sorry.
Just make sure to get plenty of calcium from other foods sources like broccoli, peas, spinach, brussel sprouts, almonds, and salmon to name a few.
Good luck!!
Sorry you have to go through this again. I remember you telling me about it with Elijah. I really don't think I could give up all that. Well, maybe it would be good for me, I'd certainly lose my baby weight fast. =)
This may sound gross, but I make my cookies with butter flavored crisco all the time. I know it is really bad for you, but it just makes them taste so much better and smoother. It's a good thing I don't make them often.
Here is an easy salmon recipe: (I buy frozen salmon from Costco because it's cheaper.) Marinate in soy sauce for at least an hour and then broil or grill. Serve over rice.
I will email you a few more.
Hey girl! No dairy huh? that stinks. Hopefully it doesn't last too long. When I was nursing Addison I was on a very bland diet. She screamed almost everytime I nursed her if I didn't really watch my diet. Good luck!
man, Lissa is harsh! You guys are so funny. Speaking of funny, Kate was the same way (actually it's not funny at all), but since nursing was already a nightmare in so many other ways, I didn't get to the point of cutting dairy from my diet. (Thankfully...cause that's all I needed on top of the other drama I was experiencing) I'm sorry though...when I had to make meals that excluded dairy because Kate was allergic up to around 18 months (?) I think, it was pretty challenging.
Chili is dairy free (if you don't add cheese on top) I have a pretty good recipe if you want it. Um...browned chicken breasts with linguine tossed with olive oil and lemon pepper...BBQ chicken with potato wedges...hamburgers without cheese, if you can eat the buns(you mentioned bread was sometimes a culprit.) Waffles (yes, I do breakfast for dinner probably more often than I'd like to admit) Omelets exnay cheese but putting peppers and tomatoes and onions in helps boost flavor. Cream of wheat made with water not milk. Tacos sans cheese...hey the citrus chicken recipe that you gave me. Pork chops...I have a recipe called mother-in-law chops that's a good oven baked one. (let me know if you're interested.) Call me and we can brain storm some more together...
